The Summit Club is Smoking Easter Hams To Benefit Engine 343
For the second year in a row, the Summit Club of Flower Mound is smoking and selling Easter hams to raise funds to benefit the Flower Mound Fire Department’s Engine 343 Restoration project. Last year, we smoked 64 hams raising more than $2,000. This year, we’re raising the number to 75 but those will go quickly so reserve yours today!
The firetruck in question – Engine 343 – is a 1942 Mack truck and the first fire engine that went into service for the Flower Mound Fire Department back in 1975. At some point in the 50 years that followed, the engine was retired and lost, only to be found again a number of years later but rusted and in rough shape. Once the engine was recovered, a campaign was started to raise funds to restore Flower Mound’s first fire truck to its original glory. Engine 343 had been lost but never forgotten. It turns out, there was also a special, almost sacred significance to the number 343.
On September 11, 2001, the New York Fire Department lost 343 firefighters in the Twin Towers. The Flower Mound Firefighters decided to honor that connection with a commitment to restore their engine, as detailed on their website. “In honor of those men and women who tragically made the ultimate sacrifice on that day, and to commemorate those who have paved the way before us serving the citizens of Flower Mound, we are restoring this engine to use as a mobile reminder and a lasting memorial of our proud history as the Flower Mound Fire Department.”
“Our town is incredibly fortunate to have the caliber of firefighters we do and any time the Summit Club can help support them, we are happy to help,” said Summit Club President Don McDaniel. “We’ve been aware of the Engine 343 Restoration for a number of years now and we wanted to find a way to contribute to the project in a way that was above and beyond our regular grants. Smoking hams for Easter seemed like a great way to do that.”
Hams are $50 and will be ready for pickup on Good Friday, April 3.
